50th Anniversary

BBC America have released details about the next episode in their monthly series covering the different incarnations of the Doctor. August explores the single TV outing of the Eight Doctor, played by Paul McGann. The show also features contributions from Doctor Who actors, showmakers and fans.

Program Details

BBC AMERICA celebrates the Eighth Doctor, Paul McGann, in a new special of Doctor Who: The Doctors Revisited. McGann (Luther) played the Eighth incarnation of the Doctor in the 1996 Doctor Who television movie, which was the first time the Doctor had returned to TV since the end of the original series in 1989. The special begins with lead writer and executive producer Steven Moffat, Eighth Doctor companions Daphne Ashbrook (Dr. Grace Holloway) and Yee Jee Tso (Chang Lee), among others, examining what made the Eighth Doctor unique and discuss a new take on the Doctor’s old enemy the Master.

The special is followed by Doctor Who: The TV Movie. The Doctor is on his way home to Gallifrey with the remains of his arch-nemesis, the Master. Forced off course, the TARDIS arrives in San Francisco on New Year’s Eve 1999, where the Doctor faces a race against time to prevent the destruction of the Earth.


Doctor Who: The Doctors Revisited – The Eighth Doctor premieres Saturday, August 31 at 8:00pm ET/PT.

BBC Worldwide presented a selection of BBC shows to Chinese broadcaster CCTV at the end of August during the BBC Worldwide China Showcase. During the presentation , Chinese TV execs were shown a two-minute Doctor Who 50th Anniversary celebratory compilation which featured all eleven Doctors to date.

Contrary to popular belief, science fiction shows, particularly those involving time travel, are not wholly banned in China, although the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television (SARFT) strongly indicated their disapproval of the genre in 2011, making it very difficult (but not impossible) for such shows and films to pass the censors.

The deals struck between CCTV and BBC Worldwide at the showcase were for factual and natural history programmes.

The BBC will celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Doctor Who with a special episode broadcast worldwide on Saturday 23rd November. The special stars Matt Smith, David Tennant, Billie Piper, Jenna Coleman and John Hurt and promises the return of the Daleks and the Zygons. Fans are still eagerly waiting for a trailer.

Charlie Higson, author of the Young Bond and The Enemy series, has penned a story for the Ninth Doctor, Christopher Eccleston.

The book entitled ‘The Beast of Babylon’ is the ninth in a series of eleven ebook short stories each based on one of the Eleven Doctors.

Story details:

When a girl called Ali pockets a silver orb that falls from the sky, little does she realize it’s her ticket to seeing the universe! BBC AMERICA celebrates the Ninth Doctor, Christopher Eccleston, in a new special of Doctor Who: The Doctors Revisited. Eccleston heralded the return of the show and was the first Doctor to appear in the 21st Century. The special begins with lead writer and executive producer Steven Moffat, writer Neil Gaiman, John Barrowman (Captain Jack Harkness) who played the Ninth Doctor’s companion, and actor Noel Clarke (Mickey Smith), among others, discussing Eccleston portraying a no nonsense, hard hitting and straight talking Doctor. The special is followed by the Ninth Doctor two-part story Bad Wolf and The Parting of Ways, in which the Doctor and his companions Rose (Billie Piper) and Captain Jack find themselves trapped in the Gamestation, also known as Satellite 5, where they must battle to survive the cruel games. However, when Rose is taken away, the Doctor realizes his deadliest enemies have returned en masse.

Have Classic era Doctors been on protest over their apparent omission in the 50th anniversary special?

Earlier today, Peter Davison, Sylvester McCoy and Colin Baker were sighted by onlookers outside of BBC TV Centre holding up some interesting banners.

The banners read: “No Classics? No 50th!” and “Have a heart, Classic Doctors want a part!”

So what is going on here? Is this genuine, or a clever publicity stunt to build anticipation for the big occasion?

There have also been suggestions that it could be a special clip or DVD extra as the event was being filmed.
