12th Doctor

How much longer are we going to have to wait for the 12th Doctor to be announced? That’s the question.

The Radio Times, who originally claimed it would be July, are now saying it will be late summer/ early autumn.

They state:

BBC insiders have told RadioTimes.com that filming on the Christmas special – to be followed by the full series – will not take place until the autumn – probably August, or even September.

According to sources the identity of the Twelfth Doctor is almost certain to be announced just prior to filming, which means that it is very likely that the new incarnation of the Time Lord will not be unveiled until late summer.

Initially the BBC had hoped to begin filming the Christmas special earlier, with some sources suggesting July as a potential date.

“Suffice to say we are completely on track,” said a spokeswoman.

So assuming this is correct (and things are still rather vague), it looks like we’re in for another couple of months of rumours and speculation.

Ben Whishaw has tried to silence rumours that he may be in the running for the next Doctor.

Whishaw more recently became known for his role as the new Q in James Bond film, Skyfall.

He told the Daily Mail: “It’s not going to be me. But I don’t mind – I don’t think you can be Q and Doctor Who. It would be a bit wrong.”

eotdec-(31)Meanwhile, David Harewood has been back in the press talking about the possibility of taking on the role.

He said: “It’s only rumors but it’s amazing to be attached to such an iconic role. It would be extraordinary if the BBC were to make me the first black Doctor Who, it would be extraordinary. But I’m almost scared to make any comment whatsoever.”

Harewood said if he did become the Doctor he would make him more “badass.” On a potential costume he said: “It would definitely be something extremely sharp. Something extremely sharp and tailored. And not to kind of put too dark a pun on it, but I would make him darker. I would like to make this guy a bit of a badass if I was to do it.”

He added: “I was in David Tennant’s final episode. So it probably wouldn’t happen anyway.”

The man behind Moriarty, Andrew Scott, is the latest actor to address talk that he may be in line for the next Doctor.

He told Flicks and the City in a video interview: “Well it’s a very flattering thing to be involved in all those discussions, but one has to wait to be asked those things.”

He adds: “They’re very secretive. I know Mr Moffat very well so he’ll keep his cards close to his chest for as long as possible.”

In related news, Matt Smith’s Doctor will battle with Andrew Scott’s Moriarty as part of a stage production tonight.

The Radio Times reports:

The Audience, a one-off sequel to hit West End show The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, will form part of an event at London’s Apollo Theatre tonight (Monday 1 July) to raise money for two autism charities.

The tale sees the Time Lord enlisting Boone’s help in an attempt to foil a plot by Moriarty (the villain viewers loved to hate in BBC1′s Sherlock) to disseminate a computer virus which would destroy people’s ability to understand metaphors (a common effect of autism) and thereby their capacity to create art and culture.

As he embarks on his mission for the Doctor, Boone asks permission from Her Majesty the Queen to seek help from secret service computer expert Q.

Actor Bill Nighy has given Peter Capaldi’s casting as the Twelfth Doctor the thumbs up.

Nighy played Dr. Black in fan favourite episode Vincent and the Doctor, but he was also offered the role of the Doctor himself before Eccleston took on the part.

He told Huffingtonpost: “I think it’s one of those things you read and you think, ‘Well, of course Peter Capaldi is going to be Doctor Who, it makes perfect sense.’

“He’s a wonderful actor, and I would think he’ll be a terrific Doctor.

“He’ll be very funny, dry, elegant and sharp, and I think it makes perfect sense.”

“We went out for lunch to talk Doctor tactics. I’m not sure if I gave him any real ideas because it’s not like he needs much help. He’ll play the Doctor in his own way – and do it brilliantly.

He added: “I can’t wait to see what he does with the part.”
